In order to successfully and timely empower the young people for an independent life, SOS Children’s village Skopje conducts a youth care program. The youth care is performed in four residential units, two of which are located in a family house in the settlement of Radishani, whereas the other two are in the settlement of Bardovci, with a capacity for placement in care for 28 young people. The youth care program is a caregiving model which is in accordance with the SOS concept for youth care and the positive laws. As part of this program, young people can learn about the responsibilities for allocation of personal finance, household management, personal physical and mental health care. A special emphasis is put on the educational support, and on making the right decision in relation to their future, selection of a profession, faculty or additional qualification, if necessary. The young people can accomplish all of these things with the help and counseling of the professional associates (mentors) who provide them with 24-hour care and support them during the process of becoming independent.
SEMI-INDEPENDENT LIVING PROGRAMME
Based on our many years of work, growth and development, we have learnt that young people with no parental care and young people at various social risks need help in order to become independent, particularly in the areas of: housing, acquiring professional and “soft” skills, inclusion in the labor market for a quicker and easier integration in social environment. The SOS Semi-independent living program supports young people from the moment their independent life begins, helping them until they become fully independent. This program is the last phase of the care and support provided by the SOS organization for children without parental care. The main goal of the phase is the smooth transition to independent life, the young person will be fully capable to bear the full responsibilities for his life. This phase follows the care provided in a foster family or as part of the SOS Youth care program and has a maximum duration of 3 years (or more for pupils and students, depending on the nature of the studies), and after it is completed the SOS organization will stop providing support and the young person lives his life independently. The particular goals of the youth support as part of the Semi-independent living program include: Providing continuous/stable employment and regular income; Acquiring suitable housing and full control and responsibility for the personal life.
As of today, we have provided support for 31 young people through this program, namely 13 employed and independent persons, 19 students, 3 persons who are in the process of completing their secondary education and 4 persons who seek employment in the labor market.
